Terri Mace of Beaufort remembers being homeless with her 16-year-old daughter. With the help of a pastor, she was able to get back on her feet.

Now, Ms. Mace will pay it forward by becoming the director of the Hope Mission women’s shelter, expected to open in about three weeks.

“I’ve been praying for the last 10 years to be able to help people, but especially hurting women,” she said Thursday as she sat in the Hope Mission Thrift Store in Morehead City, which generates funds for the women’s shelter. “I don’t think people understand what it’s like unless you’ve walked in their shoes. I’ve been there and I want to provide hope and let them know they are special and they are loved.”
